Home Vacation Checklist

Many families will be vacationing this summer. If yours is one of them, use this checklist to ensure the safety of your home and belongings while you're away.

Secure All Entry Points: Check all doors and windows to ensure they are locked and secure. If you have a garage, make sure the door(s) are closed and locked as well. Consider deadbolts or security bars for added safety.

Plants: If you're only going away for a short time, move plants to a shaded area to reduce water needs. If you'll be away for a longer period, check into a plant sitting service.

Lawn & Garden: Mow your lawn right before you leave or arrange for someone to mow and maintain the yard and garden to give your home a lived-in look while you're away.

Inform a Reliable Neighbor: Let a trusted neighbor know about your vacation plans. Ask them to keep an eye on your property, collect any mail or delivered packages, and perhaps even park their car in front of your house occasionally to give the impression that someone is home. Be sure they know where and how to reach you.

Deterrence of Vandalism: Use timers to turn on outside lights at dusk. Consider programming your TV or radio to play on a timer. If you have an alarm, set it before you leave. If you plan on being away for an extended period of time, let the police know so they can periodically drive by your property.

Unplug Electronics: To save on energy bills and reduce fire hazards, unplug non-essential electronics before you leave. Consider unplugging devices like your television, computer, and kitchen appliances. This not only conserves energy but also protects your devices from power surges.
