Thanksgiving Dinner Timesavers

Last year, U.S. farmers raised 248 million turkeys, and the average American consumed 16 pounds of this delectable bird. The information is rather staggering, much like preparing Thanksgiving dinner. But it doesn't have to be. Consider the following simple timesavers.

One word, starts with a 'P'. That's right, potluck. If your guests gasp in horror when you ask them to bring a dish, tell them you're doing Thanksgiving 'old school' this year. The first Thanksgiving celebration on record was a potluck, after all.

Just say 'no' to frozen turkey. Many a home chef has removed her turkey from the fridge only to find it still frozen. Save yourself the hassle of thawing and buy a fresh turkey instead. If you're only cooking for a few consider roasting a breast or two rather than an entire bird.

Get a head start. Many desserts can be prepared a day or two before your gathering. Some, like pies, breads and holiday cookies, may even be prepared and frozen weeks in advance. Pumpkin, apple, cherry and pecan pies all freeze very well. To serve, thaw for two hours. Then place on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven until warmed through.

There's no shame in shortcuts. If you hate to cook, find relief in a fully prepared Thanksgiving meal from the local grocer or a restaurant. If you're short on time, consider buying a few premade side dishes or desserts. Even little helpers like stuffing mixes and pre-cut veggies will reduce your meal prep time substantially.

Put everyone to work. Thanksgiving is a time of sharing, so share the work as well. Even little kids can help wash vegetables and set the table. Teens can serve as prep chefs and do the dishes after dinner.
